Burdell is a recent residential suburb adjoining Deeragun, 15 km west of central Townsville. It was named after the Burdell family who built the Bohlevale homestead (c1910), west of the Bohle River. In 1911 the family gifted land for the Bohlevale State primary school, which has become the local school for Burdell and Deeragun.

Burdell was named and gazetted in 1991. In 2007 the Thuringowa City Council approved the first stage of the Stockland Waterway Gardens residential development in Burdell. The project was programmed to be completed over 30 years with a total of 4200 house sites.

In 2008 the council completed construction of the Northern Beaches Leisure Centre (four pools and aquatic recreation) in Burdell, and the Catholic Church opened a P-7 school, St Clare's, in 2011. The school expanded in 2013 and in 2015 added a dual purpose facility for church services and outside school hours care. The Northern Beaches State High School (1997) is a few kilometres west in Deeragun.
